The terms kitchen renovation and kitchen remodeling are often used interchangeably, but they are technically different processes.

The main difference between renovation and remodeling is that a kitchen renovation keeps the basic layout and function of the kitchen the same. You may upgrade to new fixtures and finishes, but the foundation of the kitchen remains intact. With kitchen remodeling, those features start to change. You might transform your cramped galley kitchen into an open-concept kitchen with an island. You might remove a window for more cabinet space or add a window for more lighting. The transformation is bigger than it would be for a renovation, but both options can yield jaw-dropping results.

For the most part, a kitchen renovation is more affordable than kitchen remodeling. There is less work involved because there is no need to reconfigure the space.

There is a third option on the table that needs to be considered. You can change the look of your kitchen without renovating or remodeling. You can simply update it to change some elements of the appearance. Refacing your cabinets, upgrading the lighting, replacing cabinet hardware, changing the wall color, or modernizing the backsplash can all have a tremendous impact on the look and feel of the kitchen.
